Landscape Design & Installation in Phoenix, AZ

Good desert landscaping is not just rock and a few agaves. It's a planting plan that gives you shade where you need it, screening where you want privacy, color through more of the year than you'd expect, and a water bill that doesn't climb every summer. AZ Outdoor Concepts designs and installs full landscapes across the Phoenix metro — front yards, backyards, and everything in between.

We design around the two things that actually govern a Valley yard: sun and water. Shade trees go where they'll cut afternoon heat off the house and the patio, not just where there's room. Planting is grouped into irrigation zones by water need so the drip system can run efficiently instead of drowning one plant to keep another alive. Decorative rock, boulders, and dry-creek grading handle monsoon runoff instead of letting it channel toward the foundation.

What Our Clients Say

“I will start by saying I was not asked to leave a review and did not know of this company before hiring them for our pool remodel. We could not have had a better experience with Az Pool Concepts. Our pool looks amazing and the whole process was so easy and seamless. Shawn was in constant communication about what and when things were happening, he was here every day overseeing the work being done and was always available by text with any questions we had. He exceeded our expectations and I truly cannot recommend them enough.”

“I hired Shawn and AZ Pool Concepts to demo and remove a permanent grill and fire pit to create more space, replace travertine that had been eroded by my salt pool with pearlescent limestone. Shawn and his team did an excellent job. His communication, integrity and customer service are all top notch, along with customer satisfaction in the project When I was looking to hire someone these are the attributes I was looking for. I highly recommend AZ Pool Concepts.”

“What a great experience... from the time we first contacted him to the finished product! Communication was quick and clear, the timeframe to start the job was excellent and the finished product looks amazing. We interviewed 6 companies and Shawn was the best candidate by far. We will use them again.”

“Shawn responded to my email inquiry the next morning, and came out that day to bid on our Travertine Patio and walkway job. His pricing was very fair, and actually got the whole job done in three days!! We went on vacation the day the crew started, and came home to a perfect install, clean-up, and could not be happier!”

Every install includes the infrastructure that keeps it alive: properly sized drip irrigation with a programmable controller, correct emitter counts per plant, and rock or mulch cover to hold soil moisture. We use desert-adapted and desert-native species — palo verde, mesquite, ironwood, red bird of paradise, lantana, agave, ocotillo, and ornamental grasses — chosen for how they look at maturity, not just how they look on planting day.

More About Our Landscape Design & Installation Work

Landscaping is what softens hardscape and makes a backyard feel finished. We plan planting alongside the patio, structures, and turf so trees have real root space, irrigation isn't trenched through new pavers, and lighting is wired before the surfaces go down.

AZ Outdoor Concepts designs and installs desert landscapes throughout the Valley. Contact us for a free on-site consultation and we'll put together a planting plan built for your yard's sun, soil, and drainage.

Our Process

How We Work

Step 1

Free Design Consultation

We walk your yard with you, talk through how you actually want to use the space — cooking, entertaining, shade, play, low upkeep — and get a feel for materials, layout, and budget. No pressure, no obligation.

Step 2

Custom Design & Estimate

You get a full backyard design and a clear, itemized written estimate covering layout, hardscape materials, structures, plants, and timeline — and we handle the permitting with your city.

Step 3

Build & Installation

Our own crews handle every phase — grading and drainage, compacted base, pavers, walls, structures, turf, irrigation, and planting — built to hold up to Arizona sun, monsoon runoff, and caliche soil.

Step 4

Walkthrough & Aftercare

We clean up, walk the finished space with you, and show you how to care for it. We're not perfect, but we'll always be here when you need us.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much water does a desert landscape actually use?
A well-designed xeriscape with zoned drip irrigation typically uses a fraction of what turf and spray heads consume. The savings come from grouping plants by water need and running drip on an appropriate schedule.
When is the best time to plant in Phoenix?
Fall is ideal — roots establish through the mild months before summer stress arrives. Spring is a solid second choice. We plant year-round but adjust irrigation schedules and provide extra establishment care for summer installs.
What trees give the most shade in Arizona?
Palo verde, mesquite, ironwood, and ash are the workhorses. Placement matters as much as species — a tree on the west or southwest side does far more for comfort and cooling costs than the same tree on the north side.
Do you install and program the irrigation?
Yes. Every landscape install includes drip lines, correctly sized emitters, valves, and a programmable controller, and we set the initial seasonal schedule before we leave.
Can you fix drainage problems while landscaping?
That's often the most valuable part of the job. We regrade, add dry creek beds, French drains, or catch basins as needed so monsoon runoff moves away from the house instead of pooling against it.
How much does landscaping cost in Phoenix?
It scales with square footage, plant sizes, boulder and rock quantities, and irrigation scope. We provide a written itemized estimate after the design consultation.
