Placement matters as much as the structure itself. Afternoon sun in the Valley comes in low from the west and southwest, so a roof directly overhead does less than people expect after four o'clock. We plan for that with deeper overhangs, west-side screening, or tree placement — and we size structures generously, because the most common regret we hear is a shade structure built too small.
