Hardscape for every kind of Mesa property

Mesa is one of the largest cities in Arizona, and its yards vary just as widely. Established neighborhoods in central and west Mesa, including Dobson Ranch, often come with original concrete patios that have cracked, settled or simply run too hot to walk on. In the northeast, Red Mountain Ranch and Las Sendas sit on rockier foothill ground with views worth designing around. Newer communities such as Eastmark start with an empty yard.

We install paver and travertine hardscape for all of them: patios sized around real furniture, pool decks that stay comfortable barefoot, walkways along the routes people actually take, and driveways built for the weight of a truck.

What happens under the pavers

Pavers fail from the bottom up. Valley soils often include caliche and clay, and monsoon storms put a lot of water on a yard in a short time. When the base is thin or poorly compacted, the surface settles into dips and waves within a few years. We excavate to the right depth for the use, install and compact aggregate base in layers, screed a bedding layer, set and cut the pavers, and lock the edges so the field can't creep.

Drainage gets the same attention. Every patio is graded to carry water away from the house, and on older Mesa lots where decades of settling have changed how water moves, we correct the grade as part of the job instead of setting new pavers on an old problem.

Travertine, concrete pavers or both?

Travertine stays noticeably cooler underfoot than concrete or dark pavers, which makes it the usual choice for pool decks and barefoot areas. Concrete pavers offer more colors and patterns and handle vehicle loads, so they're the common pick for driveways and front walks. Many Mesa projects use both, with travertine around the pool and a coordinating concrete paver on the drive and side yard.

Because pavers are set individually, a stained, cracked or sunken unit can be lifted and replaced, and a section can come up for utility work and go back down. A poured slab can't do that without a visible patch.

Replacing old concrete in Mesa

Much of our Mesa work is removing cracked concrete patios and decks and replacing them with pavers or travertine. We break out and haul away the old slab, fix the grade and base underneath, and tie the new surface into steps, doorways and existing walls at the right heights. If the slab is sound and drains correctly, we'll tell you whether an overlay is an option, and what it means for doorways and thresholds.

“I hired Shawn and AZ Pool Concepts to demo and remove a permanent grill and fire pit to create more space, replace travertine that had been eroded by my salt pool with pearlescent limestone. Shawn and his team did an excellent job. FAQ

Pavers in Mesa: Common Questions

How much does a paver patio cost in Mesa?
Cost depends on square footage, the material, the pattern, and how much demolition and grading the site needs. After we measure your yard, you'll get a written, itemized estimate so you can compare options line by line.
Are travertine pavers good for Mesa pool decks?
Yes. Travertine is one of the coolest common deck surfaces in full sun, which is why it's so popular around pools in the Valley. Its textured finish also helps with footing when it's wet.
Can you put pavers over my existing concrete patio?
Sometimes. If the slab is solid and drains away from the house, an overlay can work, but it raises the finished height at doors and steps. We inspect the slab and recommend overlay or removal based on what we find.
Why do some paver patios in Mesa sink or get wavy?
Almost always because of the base: not enough excavation, base material that wasn't compacted in layers, or no edge restraint. Poor drainage makes it worse. Those are the steps we don't shortcut.
Do you install paver driveways in Mesa?
Yes. Driveways get deeper excavation, a thicker compacted base and a paver rated for vehicle traffic. Individual pavers can be replaced if one stains or cracks, so the driveway never ends up patched like a concrete slab.
