Outdoor kitchens built for how Scottsdale entertains

In Scottsdale the outdoor kitchen is rarely a grill on a slab. It's usually where the evening happens: a bar-height counter where guests sit with the cook, a grill and side burner with real landing space, refrigeration that keeps up on a 110-degree day, and lighting that carries the space after sunset. AZ Outdoor Concepts designs and builds those kitchens across Scottsdale, sized around how you cook and positioned so the person at the grill isn't standing in full afternoon sun.

We plan the island, the shade over it and the patio under it together. That's the difference between a kitchen that looks like part of the house and one that looks dropped into the yard. Gas, water and electrical are trenched in during the build, before the hardscape goes down, so nothing gets cut into a finished patio later.

Designing for North Scottsdale lots and ESL rules

Much of north Scottsdale falls under the city's Environmentally Sensitive Lands (ESL) ordinance. Lots there often carry recorded Natural Area Open Space (NAOS) that has to stay undisturbed, so the kitchen, the trench for its gas line and the patio around it all have to fit inside the buildable area. We map that out before design starts rather than discovering it at permit review.

Those lots also bring granite boulders, native desert edges and views of the McDowell Mountains or Pinnacle Peak. We orient the bar toward the view where we can, keep the island low enough not to block it, and choose stone and stucco colors that sit comfortably against the desert instead of competing with it.

HOA review and permits in Scottsdale

Communities such as DC Ranch, Grayhawk, Troon and McCormick Ranch review exterior changes, and an outdoor kitchen usually needs approval for its finishes, height and location before work starts. We prepare the drawings and material selections for that review, then pull the City of Scottsdale permits that the gas, electrical and plumbing work require.

If the kitchen goes under a new ramada or patio cover, that structure is permitted as well, and a covered grill needs the right clearances and ventilation overhead. We handle the paperwork and inspections as part of the job, so you deal with one contractor from design to the final walkthrough.

Materials that hold up to a Scottsdale summer

Countertops are where outdoor kitchens most often show their age first in this climate. Granite and porcelain slab handle UV and heat well; most indoor quartz isn't rated for outdoor use and can discolor in direct sun. Refrigerators and ice makers need to be outdoor-rated to run inside a hot island, and doors and drawers should be built for outdoor use.

The island itself gets a masonry or steel-framed base finished in stacked stone, stucco matched to the house, or porcelain cladding, with a bar overhang deep enough for knees and stools. Then we add the shade, fans and lighting that make the space comfortable on a June evening, not just in March.

What Our Clients Say

Real Google reviews from Phoenix-area homeowners, posted to the profiles of AZ Pool Concepts, our sister company.

“I will start by saying I was not asked to leave a review and did not know of this company before hiring them for our pool remodel. We could not have had a better experience with Az Pool Concepts. Our pool looks amazing and the whole process was so easy and seamless. Shawn was in constant communication about what and when things were happening, he was here every day overseeing the work being done and was always available by text with any questions we had. He exceeded our expectations and I truly cannot recommend them enough.”

“I hired Shawn and AZ Pool Concepts to demo and remove a permanent grill and fire pit to create more space, replace travertine that had been eroded by my salt pool with pearlescent limestone. Shawn and his team did an excellent job. His communication, integrity and customer service are all top notch, along with customer satisfaction in the project When I was looking to hire someone these are the attributes I was looking for. I highly recommend AZ Pool Concepts.”

FAQ

Outdoor Kitchens in Scottsdale: Common Questions

Do I need a permit for an outdoor kitchen in Scottsdale?
The gas, electrical and plumbing work in an outdoor kitchen requires City of Scottsdale permits, and so does a new ramada or patio cover over it. We pull the permits and schedule the inspections as part of the project.
Can I build an outdoor kitchen on an ESL lot in north Scottsdale?
Usually, as long as the kitchen, its utility trenches and the patio stay out of any recorded Natural Area Open Space (NAOS). We confirm your lot's NAOS boundaries before design, so the layout fits from the start.
Will my HOA need to approve an outdoor kitchen?
In most Scottsdale master-planned communities, yes. Associations typically review the location, height, finishes and colors. We put together the drawings and material samples your HOA asks for and adjust the design if they request changes.
What countertop works best for an outdoor kitchen in Scottsdale?
Granite and porcelain slab are the most reliable choices in full Arizona sun. They resist UV fading and handle heat. Most indoor quartz isn't rated for outdoor use, and its warranty usually doesn't cover it.
How long does an outdoor kitchen take to build?
Most outdoor kitchens take a few weeks of construction once permits and HOA approval are in hand. The schedule depends on the size of the island, whether a shade structure is part of the job, and how far the utilities have to run.
