Shade that works on a Gilbert afternoon

Many Gilbert homes came from the builder with a small covered patio, often just deep enough for a table. By mid-afternoon the sun is coming in low from the west, under the cover and across the furniture. Extending that patio cover, or adding a freestanding ramada out in the yard, is usually the single change that makes the backyard usable from spring through fall.

We size covers for the shade you'll actually get at 4 or 5 p.m. in July, not the footprint of the slab. That often means a deeper projection, a west-side screen or a second structure out by the pool or turf. A generous cover costs a little more up front, and it's the thing homeowners most often tell us they wish they'd done the first time.

Patio cover, ramada or pergola?

An attached patio cover extends the roofline of the house and gives you full shade right off the back door. A freestanding ramada sits out in the yard over a kitchen, fire pit or seating area and creates a second outdoor room. Louvered pergolas let you open the roof for winter sun and close it for summer shade. Open lattice covers give filtered shade at a lower cost, though they don't keep out rain.

Solid-roof structures also give you something to mount to: ceiling fans, lighting, heaters, misting lines and speakers. We rough in the electrical while the structure goes up, so there's no conduit running across a finished cover.

HOA approval in Gilbert's master-planned communities

A large share of Gilbert homes are in communities with design review, including Power Ranch, Val Vista Lakes, Seville, Agritopia and Morrison Ranch. Associations commonly set rules on patio cover materials, colors, height and placement, and many want the cover to match the house. We prepare the drawings and color selections your HOA asks for and build what they approve.

After HOA approval, most patio covers and ramadas need a Town of Gilbert building permit, along with permits for any electrical for fans and lighting. We submit the plans, coordinate the inspections and keep the job moving between the two approvals.

Planning shade for a new-build yard

Many Gilbert yards start as a slab, a block wall and dirt, which is a good time to plan shade. Footings go in before pavers and turf, electrical gets sleeved under future hardscape, and the cover is placed where it will work with the pool, kitchen or play area you add later. If you're building in phases, we design the whole yard first so each phase connects cleanly to the last.

“I will start by saying I was not asked to leave a review and did not know of this company before hiring them for our pool remodel. We could not have had a better experience with Az Pool Concepts. Our pool looks amazing and the whole process was so easy and seamless. Shawn was in constant communication about what and when things were happening, he was here every day overseeing the work being done and was always available by text with any questions we had. He exceeded our expectations and I truly cannot recommend them enough.”

“I hired Shawn and AZ Pool Concepts to demo and remove a permanent grill and fire pit to create more space, replace travertine that had been eroded by my salt pool with pearlescent limestone. Shawn and his team did an excellent job. His communication, integrity and customer service are all top notch, along with customer satisfaction in the project When I was looking to hire someone these are the attributes I was looking for. FAQ

Ramadas & Patio Covers in Gilbert: Common Questions

Do I need a permit for a patio cover in Gilbert?
Most patio covers and ramadas need a Town of Gilbert building permit, and any electrical for fans or lighting is permitted too. We handle the plans, submittal and inspections as part of the project.
Will my Gilbert HOA approve a patio cover?
Usually, when the design follows the community's guidelines. Most HOAs review materials, colors, height and placement, and many want the cover to match the house. We prepare the submittal package and adjust the design if the committee asks for changes.
What's the difference between a ramada and a patio cover?
In Arizona, a patio cover is usually attached to the house and extends the roof over the back patio. A ramada is typically a freestanding shade structure out in the yard, often over an outdoor kitchen, fire pit or seating area. Both can have solid roofs with fans and lighting.
How deep should a patio cover be in Gilbert?
Deep enough to shade your furniture when the sun is low in the west. For many west-facing yards that means a deeper projection than the builder's standard cover, or a screen on the west side. We look at your yard's orientation during the consultation and size the cover around it.
Can you extend my existing covered patio?
Often, yes. We check the existing structure, the roof tie-in and the footings, then design an extension that matches the house. If the original cover can't carry an extension, a freestanding ramada nearby is usually the better option.
